What are nano ring hair extensions?

A short guide to how nano rings work, who they suit and why many stylists learn them first.

Bundles of blonde and brown hair extension strands lying on a pink background

Nano ring hair extensions are one of the gentlest ways to add length or volume. Each small strand of extension hair is threaded onto a tiny ring together with a section of your own hair, and the ring is crimped closed. Nothing is glued, and no heat touches the hair.

How they are fitted

A stylist divides the hair into thin sections, places one ring per strand and closes it with pliers. A full head takes a good number of strands, so fitting takes time, but the result sits close to the root and moves naturally.

Who they suit

  • People with fine or thinning hair, because the rings are small and light
  • Clients who want to avoid glue or heat on their hair
  • Anyone who likes to be able to move the extensions up as their own hair grows

What to know if you want to learn them

Nano rings are usually taught early because they train core skills: sectioning, tension and placement. A good course covers consultation, fitting, colour matching, cutting, aftercare and safe removal. Our home page explains what a nano ring course covers and how to check dates.

Maintenance

Extensions need to be moved up as the hair grows. Clients usually return for a maintenance appointment, which is why many technicians build repeat work around the method.
