How to start offering hair extensions

A practical first-steps guide for hairdressers and newcomers who want to add extensions as a service.

Hair extensions are a service people come back for, because they need maintenance as their own hair grows. That makes them a useful addition to a chair, a home studio or a mobile service.

Start with training

Choose a method to learn first. Many people begin with nano rings because the method is glue free and heat free, and the skills carry over to others. See what a nano ring course covers.

Get a consultation routine

A good consultation is what keeps clients safe and happy. Learn what to ask about the client’s hair and health, and when to say that extensions are not suitable.

Practise before you take clients

Use a training head until your sectioning and placement are even. Then work with a friend or a model before you offer the service publicly.

Be clear about aftercare

Tell every client how to brush, wash and sleep with extensions, and when to book maintenance. Written aftercare cards help.

Finding your first clients

Start with people you already serve. Show your work honestly, and never post results that are not yours. Answer questions kindly and quickly, and the rest follows from there.
